Biography

Chris Wardle holds a bachelor’s degree in physical geography as well as a Master’s degree for water supply in developing countries.

Over the last ten years Chris has travelled extensively in developing countries working on charity projects in poor communities. He has been able to draw on his numerous experiences to inspire his creative works, particularly living for long periods in communities with different cultures in Africa and Asia.

An orphaned kitten in Northern Uganda was the inspiration for Mr. Choli’s character in the Tinfish series. He now lives in the UK with Chris’s family (via a few months with a foster family in France to organise his European passport).

Synopsis.

Mr. Tinfish the penguin lives with his family in an old oil drum at the edge of the sea, which he likes to think of as his barrel-lighthouse. Unfortunately since the time of the people the climate has been subject to sudden changes and a rapid rise in sea level creates problems, not only for the barrel-lighthouse, but for all of the animals and birds who are part of the colony. Luckily Mr. Vinegar the Walrus enjoys feeling important during a good crisis, and enlists the help of Mr. Choli and Mr. Ginger, the cats.

Mr. Choli is the head detective of the colony, although his laziness usually gets the better of him as, being a cat, sleeping and eating roast fish are his main priorities. Luckily his companions, including Mrs. Cat-biscuit the goat, and his sidekick Mr. Ginger with his ever-rumbling tummy, are there to assist in his haphazard expeditions to help the colony whenever there is a problem.

The sea level is not the only environmental problem facing the colony, and an expedition party, led by Mr. Choli, who after all has his own magnifying glass and pipe to help him appear more detective-ish, is dispatched to investigate the drying river. The exploits of the companions continue with secret tunnels and a sea voyage to Volcano Island. As the adventures unfold, it turns out that being the keeper of a barrel-lighthouse is quite a useful innovation for a penguin.

The story combines a theme of climatic change told through the humorous exploits of some very quirky characters, providing an entertaining adventure with, possibly, the occasional thought provoked at the same time.

Synopsis.

Mr. Choli is the head detective of the colony. He has gained his lofty reputation through his past adventures brought about by the climatic changes which impacted on the community. His expeditions have included finding a new home for his companions to escape the rising sea levels, the mystery of the disappearing river, and rescuing animals from Volcano Island. However, his biggest adventure is yet to come. This time he leads a boat trip to find new plants for the animals to eat as the plants at the colony are struggling to survive and grow in the increasingly hot conditions.

Luckily his companions, including Mr. Tinfish the penguin, Mrs. Cat-biscuit the goat, and his sidekick Mr. Ginger with his ever-rumbling tummy, are there to assist in his haphazard capers. As always Mr. Vinegar the Walrus is orchestrating things back at the colony, where at least Mr. Denzel the mole is usually able to offer some intelligent advice to help proceedings.

Synopsis

The animals and birds in the colony of Daphne Wood have had to face many challenges as a result of the recent changes to their environment. They have escaped the rising sea levels, rescued animals from Volcano Island, and undertaken a river trip to find new plants for the animals to eat as the changing climate started to affect what would grow. They have even faced the problems of the sea freezing in the cold winter and the land turning to desert in the hot summers. This summer, however, an earthquake brings with it more problems than they ever anticipated.

Mr. Choli feels that he’s led enough expeditions for the colony recently, particular expeditions which involved getting wet, as getting wet is his least favourite thing. Fortunately Mrs. Cat-biscuit steps up to the challenge and decides to lead the team along the coast to find out the full impact of the earthquake for herself. Mr. Choli meanwhile offers to lead a small expedition inland to inspect drier places.

Synopsis

The noise from the recent arrival of hundreds of seabirds in Daphne Wood is too much for Mr. Choli to cope with. Meanwhile, Mr. Ginger’s concerns lie with the bigger problem of the disappearing fish, which caused all of the birds to congregate near to the river at Daphne Wood in the first place. Mr. Vinegar is more worried about the effect of excessive roosting on the roof of his cottage. Despite their different concerns, they all agree that something has to be done. Fortunately, the inhabitants of Daphne Wood have become a resourceful bunch over the years and several plans are hatched to sort things out, including Mr. Ginger’s fish-finding investigation.
